Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Since pure silver is a very soft metal, the addition of a small amount of copper alloy gives the metal enough hardness to retain its shape over years of wear.

Gold-Fill

Gold-fill consists of a thin layer of real gold (identified by its karat and colour) mechanically bonded to a brass core. To be sold as gold-fill, the weight of the gold must be a minimum of 1/20  (5%) the total weight of the metal. Gold-fill is a permanent application of gold that will never need refinishing if properly cared for.

What makes gold-fill different than gold-plate? Gold-plating involves a much smaller amount of gold (usually a layer less than 0.5 microns) being electroplated to a base metal. Gold-plating is not a permanent treatment—it can wear off over time, and a well-worn gold-plated piece will usually need to be re-plated during its lifetime.

With the rising prices of precious metals, gold-fill is a wonderful way to incorporate gold into your jewellery collection at a more affordable price, while being higher quality, longer lasting, and more gold content than gold-plated items.
